Wood is one of my favorite materials for a sex toy. Sadly, wood lovers haven’t had much in the way of brand options. NobEssence has long been the premium wood manufacturer. When I saw a brand new line of wood toys pop up on
SheVibe, I nearly had heart failure. I squeed and jumped around for a while. It took me days to decide on the pieces I wanted. SheVibe sent me out the Penetralia
#28 and
#23. This review will be for #28, but stay tuned for a review on the #23 as well.
ABOUT PENETRALIA - Okay, first off, does a brand name get any cooler than Penetralia? I think not. Unbeknownst to me, Penetralia is an actual word, not just a brand name. It means:
1. The innermost parts of a building, especially the sanctuary of a temple.
2. The most private or secret parts; recesses: the penetralia of the soul.
I chuckled a little bit that someone would think to call a temple sanctuary something that sounds like "penetrate." It works much better as a sex toy brand name.
All of their pieces are numbered rather than named. I was told the numbers are coded versions of the initials of the people who helped with the design. Pretty niffty. The downside to the numbered names is that if your brain isn’t good with
numbers (mine sure isn’t) you may have some trouble remembering which number it is you have or want.
All Penetralia pieces are hand crafted. Each one will vary a bit in color and size due to this, but the shape and dimensions should closely resemble what you’ll see in my photos. I love when things are done by hand because it means
that every one is unique. No one will have a toy exactly like mine or yours. It makes me feel like a unique snowflake, which I’m quite fond of.
WHAT IT IS - Number 28 is a double ended wooden dildo. It curves in the middle, making it ideal for G-spot or P-spot stimulation. One of the many joys of wood is that it’s lightweight. It provides the same firmness as steel and glass without
weighing down your hand. If you love the feel of these types of materials but don’t like your hand getting worn out, wood dildos are the way to go.
PACKAGING - The packaging is unique and pretty awesome. Even my husband took the time to comment on the packaging, which never happens. Number 28 comes in a cylindrical wooden tube. It closes with a small velvety string. The side has the number 28
on it. The front says "Penetralia" with their logo. It’s super discreet, although it is easy to open and find out what’s inside. It can be used as storage, but keep in mind that the wood the tube is made of is pretty thin. If
you’re like me and shove a lot into small spaces, the wood can easily crack under a lot of pressure.
MATERIAL - As mentioned, #28 is made of wood. In this particular piece, Bocote wood is used. Bocote wood is often used for aesthetic things such as cabinets, gunstocks, and small specialty items. This is because the design of the wood is
different than many others, often with zebra-like stripes or eyes that form.
Worried about splinters or the wood getting damaged? Fear not! Each Penetralia piece is coated with at least three layers of SmartCA, also known as cyanoacrylate. Never heard of it? Don’t worry, I hadn’t either. It’s essentially
the same coating that NobEssence uses under a different brand name. Why use this coating? Because it’s the only medical grade 6 coating that can be used on wood.
Caring for wood is super easy. You can read more about it in the wood link above, but I’ll give a quick run down since wood isn’t a common material. With the SmartCA coating, you can bleach, boil, or autoclave it. Penetralia did
suggest not boiling or autoclaving the toys. If the toy overheats under such circumstances, the wood could split. If you’re looking to sanitize it, go the bleach route.
The wood coating feels light. It’s not like the high gloss finish of the NobEssence products. It’s more shiny than a regular piece of wood is, but not that super sheen. When you touch it you can still feel the wood grain. It gives
it a light amount of texture, but only to the hand. In use you can’t feel the grain.
Keep in mind that wood is a very firm material. There’s no give to it. If you’re used to plushy materials this will be something different. It’s more like glass or steel, only without all the weight. That’s especially good for me as I have a
bad wrists. If the heavy weight of the other materials is what you like, this will not have that.
SIZE - Please keep in mind that because this is hand crafted from wood measurements will vary from piece to piece.
The total length of mine is 10″. It’s double ended and both ends are close to the same size, one being ever so slightly smaller. The smaller end is 7/8″ across near the tip and 1.25″ at the widest point. The widest point is 4 5/8″ in
circumference. Now here’s where it gets a bit confusing on the chart. If you flip the piece around so that the flat end is up, the diameter there is 1.5″. The length of the flat area is 2″.
The middle section is 5/8″ in diameter. The larger end is also 1.25″ in diameter at the widest point and 7/8″ near the tip. However, the circumference here is 5″. When flipped around the diameter of
the flat end is 1 5/8″ and the length is 2 3/8″. This is why the circumference of this end is a bit larger.
The length on #28 is pretty impressive. When I hold it to the tip of my middle finger it extends well below my wrist. Of course, if you’re not a fan of length you can just insert less of it. That’s what I like about longer toys rather than
shorter ones. I may not need all of it, but I can use less. I can’t make toys longer.
The ends look very similar in size. Until I actually went to measure I thought they were identical. One end is larger than the other, but by so little difference that it’s not something you’ll likely catch when using it.
DESIGN - The shape of #28 reminds me of an old telephone. Remember landlines that weren’t portable, folks? Yeah, like that. I may have held it to my ear once or twice just to be funny. It curves in the center, so you can place it down (like I did
in the photo) and it just looks like a wooden phone handle replica. It’s pretty discreet for a sex toy, but of course someone who knows a lot about sex toys will likely figure it out.
The curve in the middle is there to assist in G-spot and P-spot stimulation. It’s not a super intense curve, but it is more curved than lots of toys on the market. If you need a good curve to hit your G-spot, this has it.
Each end is flat, also to aid in G/P-spot finding. For a lot of people this flattened head works really well. Some prefer a rounded head. While my G-spot is picky about a lot of things, both rounded and flattened heads seem to work
equally well for me. The ends work well for covering a lot of area, but not being so large that they don’t target well.
On mine the "eyes" of the wood line up at both of the ends with the striping going down the middle. I really like the effect this gives. I’m sure there will be a HUGE variation on this design from piece to piece, but I really like how
mine looks.
If you read my blog often, you’ll know my G-spot is hard to please. Not many things even reach it because it’s to the left and hidden away. I also need a lot of pressure on it to actually get a G-spot orgasm. What happens with some toys
that can reach it is that they’re too flexible and therefore don’t quite do the trick. Finding good G-spot toys is like finding a needle in a haystack for me. It gets frustrating.
It is because of that frustration that I get so excited when a toy will not only hit my G-spot but also give me a G-spot orgasm. This one does it, you guys!! I have to sort of push it upward some to intensify the curve, but once I do that
it hits my G-spot perfectly. Since it’s firm and the ends are fairly wide, I don’t lose the pressure once I get it. That means not only does it give me an orgasm, but it does it quickly and without me getting frustrated. Yay!
As an added bonus, the lightweight quality of the material means I can keep using this for long periods without my wrist feeling like it’s gonna fall off. The first toy that ever hit my G-spot was the Pure Wand. While I love it dearly,
my biggest complaint with it was that I was exhausted from wrist stress long before I got to the orgasm part. Glass will even sometimes cause me wrist pain. Wood is my preferred G-spotting material specifically because of this.
I think the only thing that could really use some improving on this is the coating. Maybe it’s because I’m spoiled on NobEssence toys, but I really like the high gloss wood look. In use the glossy finish glides a tiny bit easier, but
if you use a good amount of lube the difference is negligible. It’s really more the aesthetic of the gloss that I like. Oooooh, shiny!
RECOMMENDATION - Yes! If you love wood already, this is a piece you’ll want to add to your collection. If you haven’t tried wood – what the heck are you waiting for?! This is a great G-spot or P-spot toy due to the firm nature of it and its shape. If
you have issues with weighty toys or just prefer something a bit easier to hold, this will be your new favorite material. The shape is divine and should work for many.
